Shop Goodwill hasn’t disappeared from the Wednesday lineup.  It will return for a strangely scheduled appearance on Friday.

Today’s blog post is pretty blah.  I am just not feeling it.  However, I know my two readers (thanks MJ and Charlotte) will be waiting with baited breath (figure of speech girls) to see what fabulous things I have to say. So, without further ado let me introduce you to two leather wallets I fiddled with this weekend:

Wallet one is a hand stitched, two pocket version.  On this gorgeous (I jest) boy, I used a button stud closure.  My son Patrick took this one, as it was a “learner” wallet.

The second wallet is a machine stitched two pocket with a strap to hold it closed.  It too is a “learner” wallet.  I have SO much too learn!  These pictures are darker then the actual wallet.

Okay, that was about all I could muster!  I will leave you with a picture of last night’s sunset.  Enjoy.

Well, we have arrived home from our annual trek to Washington DC.  We got to spend time with Emily, Mills, Mills’ family, Randy’s sister and 3 nephews.  I must admit that this trip was all about visiting, eating, drinking and walking.  It was fabulous.

Emily has a new apartment and we thought it was darling.  She lives in the Eastern Market area now and that is such a fun place.

Here are some random pics from the trip:

 Civil War Memorial

 Lincoln Memorial

Martin Luther King Memorial

World War II Memorial

As you can see, it rained on the day Randy took these pictures above.

Here are some wonderfully erratic pics of family and friends:

One of many fabulous meals we had!

Here we are doing what DC visitors do best – WALKING!

Mills was able to arrange (magic?) a private tour of the WEST WING.  It was very, very interesting.  We were not allowed to take pictures inside but did manage to get a few shots outside and in the press room.  The press room was tiny and apparently built over a swimming pool.  I think we could sale the art in the West Wing and get out of debt trouble in the United States!  It was some of the most interesting and gorgeous art I have seen in a while.  I am not counting Katie and Mike’s art in Kansas City.

Here are the pictures from the West Wing tour:

And the picture below is possibly my favorite.  It is of the Executive Office Building from the West Wing vantage point.

And of course, it wouldn’t be a Washington DC trip without a picture of the White House:

It was such a wonderful trip to see Emily.  Everyone had a divine time and I only got one blister!  The food was outstanding and our companions were delightful.  One last highlight of the trip was I got to drink a toast to my dad with Willett whiskey.  Such a treat.

Good morning ladies, gents and everyone else!  Before we get to shopping, I need to tell you that I love jewelry but seldom wear it.  I also love pottery (I do not wear it either), but I do not think that will surprise you.  I also think I am 18, gorgeous, drive a red ferrari and have a trust fund that I will get when I turn 21.  So, be careful what I say because my mind works in strange ways.

Okay, on to this week’s treasures:

Antique Ball-Hampden Pocket Watch

This watch has 3 days remaining and currently the price is $1752

I will have to research this watch to see what makes it such an expensive piece.

Native American 925 Sterling Malachite Bracelet

One day left and currently $50

I love malachite and always have.  Yes, it might be the geologist in me or it might be that green is a favorite color of mine

Stunning Silver, Turquoise Stone, Hinged Necklace

One day left and currently $201

Well I also love turquoise jewelry, whether it is contemporary or vintage style.

John Hardy 925 Silver Black Sapphire Bracelet

One day left and currently $203

This bracelet would suit me to a “T”.  The shape is classic and the sapphire is fabulous.

Signed `MKJ` Silvertone & Turquoise Cuff Bracelet

4 days left and currently $36

Sterling Silver Turquoise Bracelet

6 days left and currently $26

Love the traditional design of this bracelet.

How about earrings before we leave jewelry?

DGS Turkey 925 Sterling Dangle Tassel Earrings

4 days left and currently $46

On to my pottery crush:

Gorgeous Signed Hand Painted Pottery Pot/Vase

1 day left and currently $146

This pot is so wonderful and just speaks to me.  Of course, I also hear other odd things in my head!

It does remind me of my dad, and that is a good thing.

Two more quick Van Briggle’s and we will be done.

Van Briggle Pottery Vase (A)

6 days left and currently $21

This is one of my favorite “classic” Van Briggles

Van Briggle Pottery Vase (B)

6 days left and currently $102

Whew, this has been quite the shopping trip.  Wait, wait there is more!

Sky Blue Pottery Vase

6 days left and currently $10

I just checked and my trust fund has been stolen!  Therefore, I think I will pass on the watch and go for the Van Briggle or the NO -Name art deco blue vase.

What are your secret loves?  I am not talking trash here so don’t go there.

We took a very short weekend trip to Kansas City.  We specifically went to attend an art show opening at the Belger Arts Center. The show featured Katie Parker and Guy Michael Davis’ ceramic work.  You can read more about the gallery and their work here:

Belger Arts Center

We also took advantage of the cooler weather to eat some very good food and visit Christopher Elbow for hot chocolate with handmade marshmallows.  It was pretty decadent!

We stayed at our favorite hotel at the Country Club Plaza.  The staff at the hotel are always just wonderful.  We love that the staff is pretty consistent and some of them have been there since the hotel opened.  We always enjoy sitting in the lobby and just hanging out.

Here are some pictures from Katie and Mike’s show:

It was First Friday Art Walk in Kansas City and the place was rocking.  Kansas City is such a beautiful town and the Country Club Plaza has been popular for decades.

Do you have any favorite shops, restaurants or art galleries that we should see when we go back in November?

Fall has arrived here in Oklahoma.  Cornucopia is such a great fall word.  Really, I am not much for holiday decorating, but do enjoy browsing for interesting items to add to my home.  Since I am not in the market for anything in particular, here is a glimpse at some things I am browsing on Shop Goodwill Online.

This painting has caught my attention.  I love still lives and this one hits the mark.  However, I do not have a square inch I can dedicate to new art, so I will pass.

Flowers and Fruit, ca. 1795 by Jan Frans van Dael

5 days left and currently selling for $377

I also like the shape of this piece of pottery:

Unique Pottery Vessel – Signed

5 days left and currently selling for $5.00

One thing I keep an eye out for is bookends.  One can never have too many.  Here are two sets that are selling now:

Lucky Foo Dogs

1 day left and currently selling for $137

The second set has poor pictures, but seem interesting:

Peacock Cast Iron Book Ends

12 days left and currently selling for $6

Here is a great pitcher in my favorite color:

Small Turqouise Fiestaware Water Pitcher

6 days left and currently selling for $6

And here is an interesting mix of vintage hammered aluminum pieces:

I am going to end this with one more oil painting.  Just love great art!

I spent the weekend on my own, as Randy was traveling.  I enjoyed the solitude and spent my time playing with leather.  I also may have watched some football.  My team didn’t win and the boys team had a Saturday off, so I watched the Texas-OSU game.  It was a heartbreaker.  No, I do not know when I became a football fan.  Maybe when I realized you could sit for hours and sometimes nap through the games!

The first thing I played with this weekend was wallets.  I cut out three, stained them, let them dry and then added a finish coat.  Here is how the leather looked when I was finished:

Now I need to sew them up.  Haven’t decided if I want to sew by hand or by machine.  Might just try both methods.

My middle son said he would love a new wallet.  We figured out that he really didn’t want the type I was currently making.  So I took some leather, wet it down and molded it over a stack of credit cards.  Here is a poor picture of my effort:

Hopefully, I will be able to make a wallet that has room for more cards and money out of this.  Haven’t stained or top coated this yet.  It is still drying out.  Because I am a jack of all trades, I will try anything once.  The good news is that I am not above throwing the “it didn’t work” items in the trash!

Okay, last leather experiment up next.  On this one, I used a tape resist and painted LUMI dye on the leather.  This is a dye that uses the sun to develop the color.  I was “killing two birds with one stone” on this one.  I had been wanting to play with Lumi for weeks and this was the first chance I had.  I had absolutely no idea if one could use it on leather.  This piece of leather has been top coated.

I haven’t decided if this will become a wallet or a trash can artifact.  I do know I want to play with Lumi and leather further.

My hands took a beating with all the dyeing.  I wore gloves, but alas they failed me.  Here is a picture of my “tan dye polish” manicure.  You might want to cover your eyes if you are squeamish.

Okay all, that about wraps up another thrilling weekend for me.  I will leave you with the sunsets I enjoyed this weekend.

Well this week’s browsing of shop goodwill online was a challenge.  Some weeks you win, some weeks you lose.  I lost this week.  The pickings were slim and the prices were high.  Since the weather has cooled a bit, blankets and throws seem to be on my mind.    Here are a few Pendleton blankets I am watching:

Pendleton Beaver State Circle of Life Wool Blanket

6 days left and $18 currently

Pendleton Beaver State Southwestern Style Blanket

6 days left and $23 currently

Pendleton Beaver State Chief Joseph Blanket

6 days left and $31 currently

Okay, that is it for Pendleton blankets right now.  If you pick one up, bring it to our marshmallow roast!

There is one thing on Shop Goodwill that I am lusting over.  Take a look:

Newcomb College Ceramic Vase c.1917

This vase has 1 day left and is currently over $2000!

Newcomb College Pottery History

Well, I am pretty sure that the vase is NOT in my future.  Take care and talk soon.

This will be my first tutorial, so please be patient and holler at me if something is not clear!

This is a picture and list of what you will use:

  1. The tassel we are making.  This one is set up to be a key ring.  I will show pictures and information at the end to make modifications.  This tassel is 4.5 inches from top of leather loop to the bottom of the fringe.
  2. Scissors capable of cutting your leather.
  3. Key ring (swivel for variation)
  4. Double sided tape.
  5. Pen
  6. Leather: I used a remnant of upholstery leather.
  7. Tape measure or ruler
  8. Tape
  9. Pattern
  10. 1/4 ” grid paper (or make your own with ruler)

My leather came from the remnant bin at Tandy Leather.  Craft stores generally carry small pieces of leather or you can recycle some from your closet.  Hobby stores and fabric stores will carry the double sided tape (I used 1/4″, though any up to 1/2″ will work).  Those same stores will carry the key rings and swivel hooks in several finishes.  If you are still reading, let’s get started!

Make a paper pattern using the measurements below.  You can vary the measurements to suit your taste.

Lay your pattern on your leather.  Either cut it our or trace around it with a pen and then cut it out.  I am using a magnetic cutting board and large magnet to hold the pattern down.  Just don’t pin your pattern down as it will leave holes in the leather.

Take the leather you cut and mark the 1/2″ line unto the BACK side of the leather with an ink pen or thin sharpie.

Next you will tape the grid paper onto the back of the leather.  Carry the tape around to the front.

Okay, time to grab your scissors again.  NO, no, do not think about tearing up this post!  Starting on the right side, cut the grid line from the bottom to the inked line at the end of the graph paper.

Continue cutting each grid line until you have them all done.  Should look like this:

Okay, let’s put this puppy together!  Grab your double sided tape, key ring and fringe.

Remember, we are working on the BACK side of the leather.

Put double sided tape about 3/4 of the length of the tab.  Grab the ring, slide it on the tab and fold over to secure.  See below for picture.

Now, let’s put the double sided tape across the top boxed edge.  Again, see the picture below for detail.

Okay, this is the home stretch.  Start rolling on the tab end of the leather.

Keep rolling until there isn’t any rolling left to be had!  Voila, you are done.

Here is a picture of some others that I made yesterday.  I embellished them with rivets, beads and leather.  I varied the rings and hooks that I used, mainly because I was grabbing from my stash!

Well, my first (but hopefully not my last) tutorial is done.  Enjoy making the tassels and if you would rather buy them, check out my store button at the top.
