I just realized that I am old, frumpy and not a hipster!  That makes for a very icky week, in my opinion.  This is the story of how it happened.

Randy and I went to an event recently where they took our picture with Old Main in the background.  When the picture was delivered and opened, I was shocked to see that I did not look like I thought I did.  Who is that lady?  Suffice it to say, I do not often look in mirrors.  Here is the photo:

Who is this lady with Randy?

Who is this lady with Randy?

Well, that was bad enough but then I read an article on a craft fair I wanted to attend.  Here is the link.  One of the quotes that left me feeling a tad bit OLD was this one; “The Perrodin couple knows how to carefully walk the line of hipsterdom, and they are doing just that with their indie craft show, the Little Craft Show.”  And than this one was the nail in the proverbial coffin; “Their customers enjoy drinking siphon-brewed Ethiopian Harrar for their morning cup of Joe, and the Perrodins know that their audience really enjoys the subtle art of picking an Instagram filter”.  Maybe, just maybe, I will still go, but really, they might not want me there!  After all, I drink Folgers!

The week was not all bad.  I created some shoe uppers that, hopefully, will get made into “real” shoes.  I am happy with the pattern so take a look:

Shoe uppers

Shoe uppers

I am hoping to finish them before Thanksgiving but will have to procure a band saw and a belt sander.  This “mature” lady is all about the power tools!  I am also making some additional leather iPad cases and might just reopen the ETSY store.

This week also had strange weather.  One day began at 19 degrees and this morning began with a temperature of 66 degrees.  I think we topped out today with 75 degrees, but a cold front is headed our way.  I guess this is a typical November.  I could do without the raging wind, which has the ability to mess with my psyche!

Wow, maybe it is the wind’s fault that I am feeling old, frumpy and not very hipsterish.  Did I mention I never look into mirrors?

Okay, that is really it for now.

As always, I love comments.

Well we are going to waltz, quickly, around the gorgeous autumn in the Ozarks.  Randy and I had a very busy month, but we spent a good bit of time just soaking up the colors and vistas.  First up, we spent Randy’s fall break, from classes, at Big Cedar Lodge.  We had not been there since our “homeless” time last summer.  My sisters came to join us for two days!  We ate, we laughed, we hiked and we had a wonderful time.  I think the pictures will give you a sense of how lovely it was:

We spent a day hiking around Dogwood Canyon.  There are over 10,000 acres in the park, but suffice it to say, we probably hiked less than that!  Again, the weather was ideal and the scenery was just mesmerizing.  We have been to Dogwood Canyon several times, but this October visit was perfect.

Well, I went to Chicago!  Yep, 5 days in Chicago making shoes.  It was incredibly awesome.  I had a cool apartment that was a mile walk to the shoe school.  Luckily, I found out that Chicago is incredibly flat and the walk was lovely.  The other student was a wonderful lady from Detroit named Molly.  Molly and I had a great time together and with Sara, the teacher.  We went on a field trip one morning to downtown to visit a shoe repair supply store.  Talk about shoe makers heaven!

Here are  the pictures:

Okay, one of the main reasons that I went back to Chicago was to learn how to make soles and finish the shoes.  Molly and I got to break in the new “Finishing” room at the school!  We sawed, we sanded and we practiced to our heart’s desired.  I was in heaven!

For reasons I cannot remember, I only have one sawing picture and several sanding pictures.  I think I was still in awe that we were using these machines.

At the end of the day, or in this case, 3 days, we had shoes!  Mine are the brown ones and Molly made darling purple and red shoes.

Except for the flying part, this trip was fabulous!  I learned a truckload about shoemaking, I had a blast with Molly and Sara and I came to really like Chicago!

Just having fun

This was an interesting festival.  The bikes were only out numbered by the T-shirt vendors.  This was also a very loud festival.  There was a whole lot of “what?, I can’t hear you” going on.  My favorite memory was the three people that stopped their bikes in front of our house and changed clothes!  Hello!

Sunday morning, volunteers from different organizations scattered out to clean up the streets.  My faith in goodness was restored as all the trash in our yard and street went bye bye.  All in all, Bikes, Blues and BBQ lived up to its billing as an amazing festival full of wonderful bikers.  Randy and I are going to get t-shirts that say “we survived BB&BBQ 2013”.

Okay, this is the story of the Wednesday I inadvertently killed off my husband!  Let’s get some background information figured out before I confess!  This is my husband:

My husband alive and well!

My husband alive and well!

For the sake of this story, my husband’s name is John Richard Smith.  When little John, known at the time as Johnny, went to kindergarten, there was another Johnny in his class.  HE did not like the other Johnny at all.  Little Johnny went home one day from school and announced that from that day forward he would be Ricky!  Fifty years later, little Johnny is still known as Ricky!  The reason this is important will be clear pretty soon.

Here is another piece of the back story:

I am a napper.  For the last 15 years or so, when I was working, I would go home for lunch and take a 50 minute nap.  I had everyone that knew me trained NOT to call during lunchtime at my home.  I even had the cat and dog trained not to bother me.  Believe me, I did not like to be bothered for that particular 50 minutes unless the house was burning down!

Now, on to the story:

One weekday, at high noon, the phone rang.  I sleepily answered hello and the person on the other end said “John Smith, please”.  Being the polite, though cranky, person that I am I said,  “John Smith is not available, may I take a message?”.  They said, “I will call back”.  Now, at this point I figured it was a salesman or a non profit calling because they did not realize my husband did not go by John Smith.  For the record, I went back to sleep!

Over the next several weeks, this person called several times at HIGH NOON.  I was starting to get perturbed.  The following things went through my mind (when I was awake):

  1. Ricky had won the lottery and they were trying to reach him.
  2. Ricky had been gambling and owed someone a lot of money.
  3. Ricky was tired of me taking naps and had paid someone to call.

Number 3 was my first pick!

So one Wednesday as I was napping (after all, it was high noon), the guy calls!  After the usual conversation starter that went like this:

“John Smith, please”.  Being the polite but REALLY cranky, person that I am I said,  “John Smith died”.  They did not say, “I will call back”.  Pretty much they just acted confused and hung up.

Skip forward to Saturday and I was looking through the mail.  I noticed an envelope addressed to THE ESTATE of John Smith.  It pretty much was a condolence letter from Ricky’s credit card company expressing their sorrow at his death, but please pay his $200 credit card bill.  Well, knock me over.  Who knew you could kill your husband, via the phone and it would stick?  Well, Ricky came home and before I could break the news to him that he was dead, he told me he had a funny story!  He had gone to lunch and his credit card had been denied!  Of course, he was not by himself at lunch and was able to get someone else to pay.  He had gone back to the office and called the credit card company and they thought he was dead!  Okay, at this point I had to tell him that it was his loving wife that had actually killed him.

That is it, the story of the day I killed my husband.  The good news is he lived through the trauma and today is a happy, healthy guy!

"Ricky" alive and well!

“Ricky” alive and well!

I would like to say that I gave up napping, but I hate to lie!  After all, I am THAT CHILD, just grown up!

I was THAT child

I was THAT child

The best news is that we lived happily ever after!

Cathy and Randy AKA Cathy and "Ricky"

Cathy and Randy
AKA Cathy and “Ricky”

There is no moral to this story.  It is just a story about a situation that, even today, I find amazing and amusing.  I changed my husband’s name for this story to protect myself from his credit card company.

Well, hello!  We had a wonderful Labor Day weekend and first week of September.  Two of our children came home for the holiday, our Kansas City favorites came down and there was a football game in town!  The town was hopping, the weather was pretty good and the Razorbacks won.  That, my friends, describes a great weekend.  BUT, if you order now, you can also get a party.  Okay, shipping is free too.  No really, we had a party.  We invited our neighbors, the family, a couple of new friends and several “older” friends.  Two of the group were classmates of mine back in the day at college.  The menu was fabulous.  I can say that because I did not do much of it.  My brother, James, brought his grill and commenced cooking 12 pork tenderloins!  You have not eaten until you have had his tenderloin.  It has been a favorite for years.  One sister brought yummy guacamole and cookies, one sister brought a corn and pecan dip and then cooked deconstructed street corn.  Between the three of them, we ate like royalty.  I threw together some heirloom tomatoes, mozzarella and balsamic vinegar.  I think we also had green beans, baked beans and some smoked salmon, but I cannot remember the details.  Patrick was the corn master!  He shucked the corn, washed the corn and took it off the cob.  I actually caught a picture of the corn guy!

Aw Shucks, Patrick!

I was busy during the party, but did manage to get a few pictures:

After a great holiday, Randy and I spent the week running around.  We hit the Farmers’ Market, Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art and Fayetteville’s First Thursday celebration on the square downtown.  Here are a few pictures of the market and the celebration on the square:

Randy and I had not been to Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art.  Here is a link to their site.  We toured the permanent collection first.  All my favorite artists were there.  I love Thomas Moran, Albert Bierstadt and Andrew Wyeth.  The art is varied and broken up into centuries.  I really enjoyed it.  They also had two special exhibits that we toured.  One was on George Washington and was excellent.  The second one was the Angels and Tomboys exhibit.  This is how they describe the curated event:

In the aftermath of the Civil War, the American girl seemed transformed—at once more introspective and adventurous than the previous generation. Although the culture still prized the demure female child of the past, many saw a bolder type as the new, alternate ideal. Girlhood was no longer simple, and the complementary images of angel and tomboy emerged as competing visions of this new generation. For the first time, girls claimed the attention of genre artists, and girlhood itself seized the imagination of the nation. Angels and Tomboys: Girlhood in Nineteenth-Century American Art explores the myriad ways artists portrayed young girls: from the sentimental, innocent stereotype to the free-spirited individual.

You can go here to learn more about the exhibit.  It runs until the end of September and is well worth visiting.

The museum buildings are also impressive.  You can read more about that here.  I did remember to take a couple of pictures.

Well, the past week saw busy days for us here in Fayetteville.  School starts tomorrow at the university and 20,000+ students moved into town!  I tell you, this place is hopping! Oh, and the shelves at Target and Wal-Mart are getting very empty.

Randy got enrolled in his two classes as a Senior Razorback!  Enrolling in classes is a bit more confusing than the last time he was in college, but all was good in the end.  He bought his books online through the school bookstore and picked them up today.  He is almost ready for classes to start.  We just have to decide if he wants the “Beatles” lunchbox here or the “Bonanza” one here.  Which do you think would look better on him?

Two of our three kids had birthdays last week.  It is hard to celebrate long distance, but they should be here for the Labor Day weekend!  Randy’s sister is also coming and that is always fun.  We are having a party.  All the cool kids are coming.  Several of the neighbors, that endured the remodeling process, are going to come and take a look at the “finished” house.  Should be a good time.  Luckily for the guests, my brother is cooking the meal.  Cooking just isn’t something I excel at doing.  When I find the THING that I do excel in,  you will be the first to know!

Earlier in the week, we had a water line put in from the meter to the house.  It actually went pretty smoothly and I managed to grab a shot before they buried it.

Now, if we can just get some grass installed, life would be lovely.

Well, you cannot live in Fayetteville without being exposed to great music.  This weekend was the “Roots Festival” and there were musicians playing all over town.  I managed to get a shot of one young lady performing at the farmers’ market.

Music on the square

I really enjoyed her music and loved her boots!  Last night we sat on the deck and listened to Candy Lee and the Sweets play at Kingfish.  That was fun.  Speaking of fun, we spent Saturday morning at the farmers’ market.  We always try to walk up there every weekend to check out the people.

Well, that wraps up another fascinating edition of life in Fayetteville.  Hope everyone has a great week and Labor Day weekend.  Check back next week to see how we are faring.  As always, I love comments and don’t forget to vote for Randy’s lunchbox!

Well, this blog post should go quickly as I do not have anything remotely interesting to say.  It has been a bit quiet around these parts.  I did look at a possible studio space last week, but haven’t decided which way I am going with it.  We spent a beautiful Saturday at the lake with family and friends.  It was so darn relaxing that I only remembered to take 3 pictures!  Bad blogger.  We took a spin around the lake in the boat.  It was so picturesque.  Thanks James for the tour.

Here are the pictures I did take at dinner time:

Here are two links I found interesting last week:

Well, I hope your week went well and I will try to be more exciting next time!  As always, comments are appreciated!
