We went to two concerts, had some great company and went to the St. Patrick’s day parade.  The first concert was Willie Nelson.  That was a good concert but there were some drunk people there so that detracted from the pleasure!  Originally, that concert was scheduled for November, but Willie’s band was in a car wreck, so March was the new date.

We then went to the Rosanne Cash concert and let me tell you, it was fabulous.  By far one of my favorite concerts in recent years.  Her new album is called The River and The Thread.  If you get a chance, take a listen to it.  That is my kind of music!  Rosanne’s cousin, Jackie, and her husband were in town visiting my sister and brother in law, which was great for many reasons.  We enjoyed their visit, complete with good food and great conversations.   Of course, since they went with us to the concert, we got to meet Rosanne!  Oh my, she is such a nice person and so friendly.  We grabbed a photo op:

MJ and I with Rosanne Cash

Rosanne and her band were headed to Louisiana for two shows and bless my heart, I wanted to go!  She puts on such a great concert, so check it out next time she is in your neck of the woods.

Randy’s sister came to spend a few days with us.  There is not anyone we would rather have visit.  Good conversation, good food and lots of laughing are the hallmark of a Charlotte visit!  Yes, that pun was intended.  We also got to spend some time with our friends Jodie and Nancy.  Let me just tell you, it was a wonderful week all around.

We live one half block from Dickson Street.  All the parades in town go right down that street.  Of course, being good citizens, we like to watch the parades.  So, this weekend we went to the St. Patrick’s parade.  The weather was gorgeous, the crowd was thin and the parade was short.  Here are some pictures:

The band that was playing on the “float” were really good.  Wish I knew who they were.

So, in a nutshell, that is what we have been doing.  Today we got 3 inches of rain and then it snowed!  Luckily, the weather is supposed to improve tomorrow.  Remind me in August that I whined about this winter.  Everyone have a great week and I will talk soon.

If you have anything interesting (or dull) to say, please do!

Today we had sleet, ice, snow, rain and dark of night!  Schools are closed, restaurants are closed and everyone is so done with winter.  I had plans to go to Rogers for lunch and a play with my sisters.  As it turned out, we could not get there.  I can’t decide if I was sorrier to miss the play or the mexican food!

On the bright side, yesterday’s weather was fabulously warm with a bit of cloud cover.  Fayetteville celebrated Mardi Gras with a parade around the square and down Dickson Street.  It was colorful.  Here are the pictures, courtesy of James:

Hopefully, the weather will be looking up later in the week!  We are going to see Willie Nelson and Roseanne Cash.  Looking forward to both concerts.

Hope it is warm and sunny in your world.

I just need to get some pictures together before I finish it.  I know I have been a bad blogger, but really it has been a cold, lonely winter without much excitement.  Hope you all have a lovely Monday!

But hey, feel free to leave a comment!

Well, this winter just will not stop.  We had snow last week and it is still on the ground.  The days are cold and cloudy.  Where do I live?  I am so confused by this weather.  The good news is this is the worst winter in 20 years, so hopefully the next 19 will be mild.

Tonight was the Grammy’s salute to the Beatles.  It was wonderful but nothing shows the age difference between Randy and I like the music of our youth.  When the Beatles played the Ed Sullivan show, I was in second grade and Randy was a teenager!  One great thing is that Randy knows every word of every song, the history behind the song and what album it is was on.  I, on the other hand, hated second grade!  You can read that post here.  Looking at the date on that report card, I guess I was in first grade instead of second when the Beatles landed in the USA.  Well, details are not my strong suit!

My thoughts on music seem to be more random.  I was the girl that wanted “Send in the Clowns” at my wedding!  Remember how it ends?  “Don’t bother, they’re here!”.  Yep, music definitely is not what keeps Randy and I together.

Thirdly, James and I are making boots!  Brown boots to be exact.  I have some pics below for your perusal.  James is a natural on the sewing machine.  Sat right down, sewed leather like a pro!  Might have to hire him.

Well, thinking about the nuns in second grade has stressed me out.  Hope I can sleep tonight!

Here are the pictures of the latest snowstorm and some of boot making.  Enjoy, talk soon and let me know how you are surviving winter!

One of the many skills that my dad taught my children was how to shop for groceries and then cook them up.  My son, James, is spending some time with us right now.  Last night he decided to make jalepeno poppers to savor during the Thunder game.  Let me tell you, these were delicious!  He did not use a recipe per se, just kind of winged it.  He made two different fillings, one cream cheese and one cream cheese with sausage.  I have to tell you, they were delicious and it warmed my heart that he made these for our dinner!  Here are the pictures:

I loved these poppers and was thrilled to turn the kitchen over to James.  I appreciate that Papa Willett taught him to cook!  Nothing better than watching a guy in the kitchen.

What have you cooked lately?  Talk soon.

Mabel was my paternal grandmother and this is a short story about her artistic legacy.  Mabel has been gone for forty years, since I was around sixteen years old.  However, she lives on in my everyday, mainly through her art.  My dad often said his mother was a tiny, tenacious, Texas woman.  While she did spend a large majority of her life in far west Texas, she was actually raised in southwest Oklahoma.  Mabel grew up, became a teacher and then a wife, mother and artist.  My father also said he thought every house had a kiln in the basement.  I think he was surprised to find out otherwise.

Mabel raised her 5 children, with her husband, in a very small town in west Texas.  My dad called in godforsaken and could never figure out how his mother found beauty there.  I have never been to the town, but here is a picture of how it might have looked:

My dad left west Texas after he discovered trees!

Mabel wrote poetry, painted china and was an oil painter.  Part of her legacy is the prolific number of paintings that she left us.  The other part of her legacy are the talented family members that followed her.  I have two cousins that paint and one that is a cartoonist.  Those are just the ones I know of!  My dad’s six children seemed to have missed the artistic gene, but one of his grandchildren is a successful ceramicist!  I have written about her here.

Here is picture of Mabel, her husband and several grandchildren:

My grandmother produced quite a bit of art.  I was able to take a shot of two pieces of china that she painted.

I also have a notebook full of her poetry, but alas it is in storage.  When I think of my grandmother, I think of her many paintings.  She painted both landscapes and still life subjects.  I must admit that the still lifes are my favorites.  Okay, let’s take a look at my poor photos of her paintings:

I promise the painting are much better in real life!

Mabel left Texas after her husband died.  She spent most of my childhood in Colorado Springs, Colorado.  What a change of scenery that must have been.  She continued painting until she died.  Mabel was an inspiration for this kid from a small Oklahoma town.  She wasn’t much like my friends’ grandmothers.  She was definitely a “tiny, tenacious, Texas” woman and I am grateful for all the beauty she brought to our lives.

Okay, someday I will let you know about Jean, another interesting Texas woman.  Thanks for hanging around with me.

Luckily for you, I do not have many words tonight.  We had a fabulous Christmas holiday that is coming to an end today!  Emily was here for two weeks and the boys were with us for one week.  We watched a lot of football, shot some pool and played backgammon!  OU capped off the football season with a huge win and made our day.  Emily and I found some time to make felt balls which became a string of garland.  We also managed to felt a bar of soap for James.

We spent some time at Big Cedar Lodge in Missouri.  This was the 5th or 6th year we have gone there.  The lodge decorates for Christmas and they do a much better job than I do!  The weather was cold and it snowed a little bit.  We also had one beautiful day that bordered on warm.  All in all, it was a great couple of weeks.  So here are the pictures:

Well, as the title suggests, I find that parenthood is the original long and winding road.  It seems like there are seasons that we go through to get these children raised.  If truth be known, I am amazed my parents let me live!  Just suffice it to say I was a strong willed child.  I did, however, make it through my youth and turned out to be a pretty good adult.  By pretty good, I mean I made a living and paid taxes!  My children are on their own paths now and I like to mark the big events.

Here were my goals for the kids many moons ago and how we did:

  • survive the early toddler years √√√ for all 3 children
  • ace the elementary school years and first communion √√√
  • manage the middle school years √√√
  • succeed in high school and confirmation √√√
  • enjoy and conquer the college years √√ and working on the last checkmark

Patrick graduated this weekend from University of Oklahoma.  Randy and I went to Norman for the convocation and to celebrate the milestone.  We had a wonderful time, a fabulous dinner and a great visit.  I took a few (I mean many) photos of the day’s events.  I do need to mention it was freezing, rainy and 30 mph winds out of the North.  I do not think we took our coats off all day.  So without further ado, please check out the pics of Patrick’s day:

Now we are ready for all three children to be home for Christmas!  I will then put a √√√ on the holiday.

I also had two nephews that graduated this fall.  Austin finished up his masters at OSU and Nick finished his BS at UMKC.  Dang, this is a great family and we are proud of these guys.  Excited for that final √ in May 2014.

Wishing everyone a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

As always, I love comments!

We are continuing to survive our first ice and snow storm here in Fayetteville.  The storm started last Thursday with an inch of ice and then continued into Friday with 7 inches of snow.  It was beautiful but we are so over it!  Here is what I have learned:

  • Fayetteville does not clear the roads.  Of course, with all the hills, that is pretty understandable
  • Boots, hats, down coats and thermal underwear are needed when cabin fever hits
  • My sister gets cabin fever a full day before I do
  • Restaurants stay closed during winter storms
  • I get tired of my own cooking pretty quickly
  • It is scarier to walk down an icy hill than it is to walk up that hill.
  • Walking up an icy hill is very scary
  • People are nicer when there is 7″ inches of snow on the ground
  • Parking rules are not enforced during snow events

So to recap, the snow is beautiful even if the roads are not passable.  Hills grow exponentially steeper during ice events.  Check out the pictures:

Since I haven’t been able to get to the shop in 4 days, I have been doing small leather projects.  I have cut and hand sewed several wallets, a couple of wine carriers and a few coffee cup sleeves.  To say that my thumb is sore would be an understatement!

I am hoping the roads start to clear soon and we can go out to eat!  There is only so much chili one can eat and only so many football games one can watch.  The good news is that OU beat OSU in the Bedlam game.

In other news, my daughter sent this picture from a recent museum trip in Missouri.  This is so Emily!

Well friends, stay warm and eat chili!
